Bulletproof breastplate,19th-century artwork. This breastplate was invented by a German tailor Heinrich Dowe. Here,Dowe (wearing the breastplate) is taking part in a military test of its effectiveness. The cloth-like material used did not contain steel or iron. Although it successfully stopped the bullets,it weighed around 5 kilograms and was too heavy for widespread use.
