Detached stem bulbils of the tiger lily,Lilium lancifolium. The picture shows bulbils that have been remived from a Tiger lily plant, and which had already begun to produce roots in situ. Bulbils are developed from axillary buds between the lily stem and its leaves. They resemble miniature lily bulbs, less than 1cm in diameter.Stem bulbils are a means of self-propagation by lilies that produce them. They are also a convenient way of propagating lilies for gardeners, resulting in flowering-size plants after two or three seasons, considerably quicker than plants raised from seed | |
