They can be hairlike,mushroom shaped,branched,round,flat etc. If the surface of a plant has hairs it is said to be pubescent and any covering of hairs on a plant is called an indumentum. The purpose for trichomes is diverse but includes,protection of the plant surface,absorption of light,water conservation,preventiion of injury from insects,protection from wind and/or rain,just to name a few.
