Dionaea muscipula, commonly known as the Venus flytrap,is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the southeastern coast of North America. It is a small low growing plant forming 4 to 7 radially set leaves that grow from a root-like bulb in the subsoil. It feeds on insects by trapping them in the terminal part of the leaf, after it is triggered by tiny hairs on the inner surfaces; an extremely smart mechanism that has strongly intrigued scientists. In season, small white flowers are born with faint green veins; The flower stalk is devoid of leaves and can reach up to 30 cm height. The genus Dionaea is closely related to the waterwheel plant and the sundews, all of which belong to the family Droseraceae | |
