Shackleton's hut (centre) in the Antarctic,with penguins in the foreground and Mount Erebus in the background. The hut was built at Cape Royds during the British Antarctic (Nimrod) Expedition (1907-1909) led by Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922). This photograph was obtained during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition and led by Robert Falcon Scott,the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. Photographed in November 1911 by Herbert George Ponting
