Statue of US astronaut Alan Shepard (1923-1998). Shepard was the second person and the first American in space. In 1959 he was one of the original group of seven astronauts to be chosen for the Project Mercury program. On 5th May 1961 he piloted the Freedom 7 spacecraft on the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission and became the first American in space.
