Ceramic drug jar for Extract of Rhubarb. Decorated jars such as this one were used to store medicines such as pills,syrups and oils. They would be displayed in apothecaries,and the elaborate decorations reflected the prosperity of the apothecary store. Decorative lettering would indicate the jars contents.
