Insect radar research. A portable radar tracking station featuring a scanning horizontal (also known as a harmonic) radar. This station is used to track the movement of low flying insects, such as honeybees and butterflies that have been tagged with a tiny transponder. The tracking station transmits a radar signal which is bounced back by the transponder at a different frequency and read by the station. This work has allowed researchers to understand orienteering, searching and foraging flights in bumble and honeybees. Photographed at the Rothamsted Research,UK | |
