Artwork of the scene inside the turbulent atmosphere of a brown dwarf. Brown dwarfs are stellar objects that are a hybrid between a star and a planet. They are much more massive than a planet, yet are not massive enough for their internal pressures and temperatures to fuse hydrogen into helium, the hallmark of a true star. This work shows a view high up in the atmosphere of brown dwarf ULAS J222711-004547,between two cloud decks. Astronomers have discovered that this object is much redder than typical brown dwarfs, due to the presence of sizeable grains of minerals (enstatite and corundum) in its clouds. There may even be hail-sized particles raining down | |
