Portrait of Brigadier General William Alexander Hammond (1828-1900),American military physician and neurologist. During the American Civil War he was the eleventh Surgeon General of the United States Army,and reformed military hospitals and the Army Medical Corps. He founded the Army Medical Museum (now the National Museum of Health and Medicine).
