Goddard rocket research. Rocket with turbo-pumps at the Goddard workshop in Roswell,New Mexico,USA,in 1940. With US rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard (left,1882-1945): Nils T. Ljungquist (machinist),Albert Kisk (brother-in-law and machinist),and Charles Mansur (welder). Despite receiving little recognition during his lifetime,Goddard,a pioneer of astronautics,explored mathematically the feasibility of reaching high altitudes using rocket propulsion. In 1926 he built the first liquid-fuel rocket. His speculations about Moon rockets were ridiculed,and his achievements were only recognised after his death with the dawn of the Space Age
