Goddard rocket research. US rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945) observing a rocket launch site (upper left) from his control hut. The firing mechanism is beside him. Despite receiving little recognition during his lifetime,Goddard is now hailed as a father of modern astronautics. He explored mathematically the feasibility of reaching high altitudes using rocket propulsion,and in 1926 built the first liquid-fuel rocket. His speculations about Moon rockets were ridiculed by his contemporaries,and his achievements were only recognised after his death with the dawn of the Space Age. His main research was carried out in the 1920s and 1930s
