Keyhole splenectomy. This patient's spleen is being removed by laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. This involves making small incisions in the patient's abdomen and inserting a laparoscope (a tube with a light source and camera) and small surgical tools to operate. Keyhole surgery reduces healing time and the risk of infection during surgery. For a splenectomy, the blood supply to and from the spleen is cut and joined together. The spleen is then placed in a bag inside the abdomen. One of the small incisions is enlarged in order to deliver the spleen out of the abdomen in this bag | |
