Terra Nova Antarctic winter hut (lower centre),with the Western Mountains,and an ice sheet with embedded iceberg in the background. This is the winter quarters hut of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) in January 1912. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition,the primary expedition objectives were scientific experiments,observations and gathering of specimens in Antarctica. Led by Robert Falcon Scott,the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. Photograph by Herbert George Ponting
