| Ultrastructure of a typical cell,coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). In blue are the cell's mitochondria,the energy stores of the cell where aerobic respiration takes place. In yellow is the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER),which is a membrane-bound organelle that is the site of lipid synthesis and the production of membrane-bound proteins. The black dots surrounding the RER are ribosomes. At centre is the Golgi apparatus (purple),responsible for packaging and processing newly synthesised proteins.
