Dry gangrene of the toes. Dry gangrene occurs as a result of reduced or blocked circulation to body tissues. This patient has developed dry gangrene as a result of the plague bacterium (Yersinia pestis). The lack of blood flow causes the affected area to putrefy (rot) and die. If detected early,it can be treated with vascular surgery or hyperbaric oxygen therapy. However,once necrosis (tissue death) has set in,the affected area must be amputated | |
