Columnar crystals of aquamarine (hexagonal crystal system) are here embedded in a host-rock made up of muscovite. Aquamarine is a variety of beryl and is often found in pegmatite, complex rock suites formed at great depth, often the source of ores and semi-precious stones. The host-rock,the micaceous mineral muscovite is also common in pegmatite. The colour of aquamarine varies from green to blue, like the waters of the sea, hence its name. This specimen is from a reputed location in the Gilgit region of Northern Pakistan | |
