Submarine cable telegraphy. 19th-century tables of research on the rate of transmission of electrical signals through underwater telegraph cables. The first commercial submarine telegraph cables were laid in the 1850s. Here, the length is expressed in knots (nautical miles) for a cable several thousand kilometres long. The tables show changes in the signal under various conditions and for transmission of dots and dashes. These experiments were carried out in 1859 by British inventor and engineer Fleeming Jenkin (1833-1885).
