Monkey puzzle tree. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a monkey puzzle tree(Araucaria araucana) leaf. This leaf has a thick cuticle covering the upper and lower epidermis of the leaf and sunken stomata to help minimise water loss. Stomata are pores that are the site of gaseous exchange in the plant. Triangular bunches of sclerenchyma (pink) beneath each epidermis add strength. Two vascular bundles are seen along centre, with phloem vessels (brown),which transport carbohydrates, and xylem vessels (pink) that transport water and mineral nutrients. Also along centre are two resin canals (large clear circles). Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide | |
