Gamma-ray burst (GRB),artwork. GRBs are massive short-lived bursts of energy that are hundreds of times brighter than an ordinary supernova. Before light from a gamma-ray burst arrives at Earth,it passes through interstellar gas in its host galaxy (shown here),and intergalactic gas between the distant galaxy and us (shown in C020/0605). This leaves an absorption signature on the light that reveals information about the GRB and the material between us and the distant galaxy.
