Fossil of Gyrodus Circularis,an extinct genus of a pycnodont bony fish that evolved in the Triassic period and lived throughout the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Their habitat was shallow marine, but they may also have lived in sweet waters. The order of Pycnodontiformes is now extinct, disappearing during the Eocene epoch. They had strong, flat teeth, with which they could crack hard-shelled prey, such as molluscs, crustaceans and echinoderms. The group has been found in rock formations world wide. This specimen, actual length 40 cm,is from the Solnhofen limestones of Bavaria, southern Germany | |
