Aluminium precipitate in sodium hydroxide. When sodium hydroxide is added to a solution of aluminium sulphate,a white precipitate of aluminium hydroxide forms. The addition of excess sodium hydroxide forms a clear solution of sodium aluminate (see image C019/9199). Together with the use of ammonia (where the same precipitate forms but excess ammonia fails to remove the precipitate),these reactions can be used to test for the presence of the aluminium ion | |
