Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a leaf of the Rosemary plant (Rosmarinus officinalis). Spherical oil glands are found amongst the branched hairs (trichomes) covering the lower surface of the leaf which has a greater profusion of hairs and glands than the upper surface. When the glands are damaged or broken the oil is released, producing an aromatic odour. Magnification: x1550 (x381 at 10cm wide) | |
