Jacques Babinet (1794-1872),French physicist, astronomer and meteorologist. His major scientific contribution was in optics, particularly diffraction, where he established “Babinet's Theoremâ€. He was the first to suggest using wavelengths of light to standardise measurements and in 1827 he standardised the Angstrom unit using the wavelength of the red line of cadmium. He also invented a number of instruments for use in polarised light microscopy including the Babinet compensator,a double quartz wedge used in the study of elliptically polarised light. He studied Mercury's mass, the Earth's magnetism and the course of rivers | |
