Electro-Life generator galvanic apparatus,dating from twentieth century America. Electromagnetic devices such as this one were used in the historical medical discipline of 'galvanism',to cure nervous diseases. Galvanism is the therapeutic application of electric currents to the body to stimulate muscle contraction,it was a popular branch of quack medicine throughout the nineteenth century and its use continued into the twentieth century. Galvanism takes its name from Italian physiologist,Luigi Galvani (1737-98) who discovered that electric currents could affect muscle activity in dissected animals. Today,the study of the electrical properties of cells and tissues is known as electrophysiology
