Ceramic phrenology head,dating from 1850 England. It bares the name of its maker,L.N. Fowler and is pictured with a handbook. Phrenology is a branch of pseudoscience in which the morphology of the skull is studied. Phrenologists believed the size and shape of the skull to be indicative of various emotional and character traits and of mental abilities. The discipline was founded in 1796 by Dr. Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) and was very popular during the nineteenth century. Lorenzo Fowler was a leading American phrenologist and his ceramic head became well known as a symbol of the discipline.
