Ceramic phrenology head,by L.N. Fowler dating from around 1850,England. Phrenology is a branch of pseudoscience in which the morphology of the skull is studied. Phrenologists believed the size and shape of the skull to be indicative of various emotional and character traits and of mental abilities. The discipline was founded in 1796 by Dr. Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) and was very popular during the nineteenth century. Lorenzo Fowler was a leading American phrenologist and his ceramic head became well known as a symbol of the discipline. Though phrenology is regarded as pseudoscience today,Dr. Gall's view of the brain as a modular organ with localized functions is considered to be of historical significance to modern day | |
