Ryan X-13 Vertijet. The Vertijet was a vertical take off and landing (VTOL) aircraft built by Ryan Aeronautical built in 1955 for the US Air Force. The Vertijet was able to take off vertically, fly horizontally and land vertically. The plane's nose included a hook so it could attach itself to a cable on a vertical trailer. Despite operating successfully, the project was cancelled in 1957 mainly due to the impracticality of the pilot not being able to view the ground when landing | |
