Galaxy M63 and comet C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy). Comets are bodies of ice and dust that enter the inner solar system from the outer solar system. As they approach the Sun,the heat boils the ice, producing a coma around the nucleus, along with a tail stretching out behind it. Comet C/2013 R1 (right) was discovered in September 2013 by Australian comet observer Terry Lovejoy. Spiral galaxy M63 (left,NGC 5055,the Sunflower Galaxy) lies 37 million light years from Earth,in the constellation of Canes Venatici. This image was obtained on 25 November 2013 | |
