Comet Encke (2P/Encke). Comets are bodies of ice and dust that enter the inner solar system from the outer solar system. As they approach the Sun,the heat boils the ice, producing a coma around the nucleus, along with a tail stretching out behind it. Comet Enke is a periodic comet that completes an orbit of the Sun once every three years, the shortest period of any known comet. First recorded by Pierre Mechain in 1786,it was first recognized as a comet when its orbit was computed in 1819 by Johann Franz Encke. This image was obtained on 30 October 2013 | |
