Botanical specimens c.1839. Photogenic drawing of botanical specimens created by William Henry Fox Talbot. This negative image was produced by laying botanical specimens onto light sensitive paper and exposing them to light. The paper was prepared by soaking it in a weak solution of common salt. Once dry it was brushed with a solution of silver nitrate followed by further washing in a strong solution of common salt. Exposure was usually made by contact printing for as long as it took an image to appear. The image was then fixed using a strong solution of common salt or potassium iodide | |
