Blast furnace. This is the Stanhope Anthracite Furnace,Stanhope,New Jersey,USA. Built in 1840,it was converted to steam power in 1845. Anthracite is a mineral form of coal which can be smelted together with iron ore to produce anthracite iron. The process was displaced by coke-fired furnaces from around 1875. This photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon) | |
