Blast furnaces. This furnace is part of the works of the Republic Steel Company (founded 1899) in Cleveland,Ohio,USA. This site was originally part of the Corrigan McKinney Steel company (on Cuyahoga River),acquired by Republic Steel in 1935. Coal was supplied by Pickens Mather. Dating from the 1930s,this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen,with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon) | |
