Charcoal furnaces,New York,19th century. Hot and cold charcoal furnaces,at Wassaic,Amenia,New York,USA. Also called beehive charcoal ovens,these structures date from 1825. This photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen,with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon)
