Camera Obscura,Gillray depicts Hastings demonstrating his camera obscura to his supporters Lord Thurlow,Queen Charlotte and George III. Hastings reduces in size several large images including that of his alleged mistreatment of the Begums of Oudh, which was an important element in his impeachment. Gillray includes a quote from an episode in Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' (bottom left),in which Jupiter investigates the widespread crimes committed by human beings, and finds them far worse than rumoured. Gillray thus draws a parallel with the investigation into Hastings' actions, implying that they too were far worse than rumoured. Published : 1788 Illustrated by James Gillray | |
