Lens polishing machine. Illustration of a lens polishing machine from 'Micrographia' (1665) written by British physicist Robert Hooke (1635-1703). In this machine, the glass blank (marked 'Q') was set against the grinding tool (marked 'K'). The grinding tool was rotated by a lower mechanism which was turned by a wheel (marked 'H'). The position of the blank was adjusted by a lever and screw mechanism (at upper left). Hooke used lenses like this in the compound microscope he first described in 'Micrographia'. The compound microscope was an improvement over previous designs and allowed Hooke to be the first to see plant cells in thin slices of cork | |
