Betty Grable (1916-1973),US actress. Born Elizabeth Ruth Grable,she made her debut as a child actor in 1929. She rose to fame in the 1940s,appearing in a succession of musical films. Renowned for her beauty and her legs (which were insured by her film studio). She became a pin-up girl during World War II,and was known as 'the girl with the million dollar legs'. Here,her stockings,made of the new material nylon,are about to be auctioned at a World War II bond rally. Grable's stockings typically sold for around 40,000 US dollars a pair at such auctions. During the war,around 185 billion US dollars were raised through war bonds. Photographed circa 1942
