Industrial dynamos. Historical image of a group of engineers and workers in front of an industrial-scale set of dynamos. Dynamos are devices that convert the power of rotary motion into electrical power. They are used in an industrial setting to generate electricity at power stations or in factories. They were first invented by Michael Faraday in 1831,and developed on an industrial scale in the 1870s. These are 'Washington' dynamos. This photograph is from the Bain News Service,one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The bulk of the Bain images date from the period from the 1890s to the 1930s
