Pale tussock caterpillar (Calliteara pudibunda). This larval stage of the pale tussock moth is hairy to protect itself from being eaten by predators. The hairs can have an irritant effect if the caterpillar is handled. Caterpillars feed constantly, mostly on leaves and other vegetation. When fully grown,a caterpillar pupates into the winged adult form, with the females laying eggs to continue the cycle. Photographed in September in Dorset,UK | |
