Surveying methods. 16th-century woodcut showing a man facing a tower. He is pointing a Jacob's staff (Baculus Jacob) or cross-staff towards the top window of the stone tower. This device was an early surveying instrument used to measure angles,heights,and distances. This artwork is from 'Aepitoma omnis phylosophiae' (1504) by the German author Georg Reisch (c.1467-1525). This work is better known as 'Margarita philosophica' and was first published in 1503
