Early nineteenth century token for 'Basil Burchell,Sole Proprietor of the Famous Sugar Plumbs for Worms,No. 79 Long Acre'. Intestinal worms were very common in the 1800s,particularly in children. This was a popular 'Quack' remedy. Merchant's tokens such as these were used as an alternative currency and were exchanged for goods. Tokens were made of cheaper,lighter metals and were of lower value than money. They also served as advertisements for the merchant's products.
