An opening flower bud of Trillium sessile,a rhizomatous woodland plant for the NE United States. It is a member of the monocotyledonous familiy Melianthiaceae, and related to the genus Paris. The Monocotyledons contain several species with exceptionally large genomes, including the largest yet known, that of Paris japonica. The genome of T. sessile is also large. It shows "genome obesity",with a genome size of approximately 50000 million base pairs. This compares to the human genome,at 3000 million base pairs. A single molecule of T. sessile DNA in extended form would be 33m long, compared to 2m for human DNA.T. sessile is a sound perennial garden plant, flowering in early Spring, suitable for humus-rich shaded woodland situations. This plant was photographed in Norfolk UK in April 2013 | |
