Folded rock strata. These folds formed as the rock was deformed at depth by immense pressures generated from within the Earth's crust. The rocks were then later uplifted to the surface and exposed by erosion. The strata originally formed as sediments were deposited in flat layers. These overturned and recumbent folds are an indication of intense tectonic forces acting within a limited area. These thinly bedded Jurassic limestones are part of a rock face straddling a gorge just west of Anduze in the Cevennes mountains of southern France. The shrubs give an indication of the scale | |
