Astronaut plant experiment on the ISS. Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov (born 1973),Expedition 28 flight engineer,checking the progress of a plant experiment on the International Space Station (ISS). This is a new growth experiment that is part of the BIO-5 Rasteniya-2 (Plants-2) payload,housed in its LADA-01 greenhouse. Such experiments are carried out to see how plants grow in space,especially to try and ascertain the effects of free fall and reduced weight (microgravity). This experiment,operated by Russian space company RSC Energia,is located in the Zvezda Service Module of the ISS. Photographed on 31 August 2011
