Pipeline bubble research. Professor Tim Leighton studying underwater bubble clouds generated by a gas leak in a pipe. This is part of research into measuring gas bubbles in underwater pipelines. Differences in pressure between the seabed and surface lead to the rapid expansion of any gas bubbles. This expansion can cause a 'blow out' in equipment. Such a blow out was responsible for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Photographed in the AB Wood Underwater Test Tank at the University of Southampton,UK | |
