Housefly (Musca domestica). This fly feeds on organic material, including decomposing matter, and carries numerous diseases which it can spread to human food. This housefly is part of waste digestion research. Housefly maggots (larvae, see C015/9937 and C015/9938) are being used to digest the residual material from anaerobic digesters used to break down organic waste. The product is the maggots themselves, which are harvested before they turn into flies. The maggots are processed for the oils and protein they contain. This research was carried out in 2012 by the UK's Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) | |
