Elephant and mastodon. 19th-century artwork of an Asian or Indian elephant (top; then Elephas indicus,now E. maximus) and the fossil skeleton of a mastodon (bottom; Mastodon giganteum,sometimes named M. giganteus). Mastodons are an extinct part of the elephant evolutionary tree,occurring between 20 million and 12,000 years ago. Across centre are artworks of the teeth of an African (left) and Indian (right) elephant. Artwork from 'Encyclopaedia Metropolitana',an encyclopedia published in London between 1817 and 1845. Thirty volumes were issued in 59 parts,with 22,426 pages and 565 plates. This plate is dated 1824
