Arithmetica by Diophantus of Alexandria. This book is part of a series written by the Greek mathematician Diophantus of Alexandria, who lived in the 3rd century, that deal with solving algebraic equations. An annotation by the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in the margin of 'Arithmetica' claimed he could prove that no three positive integers a,b,and c can satisfy the equation a to the power of n plus b to the power of n is equal to c to the power of n. His proof was never found and the equation became known as Fermat's Last Theorem. It was finally solved in 1995. This is the cover of the 1621 edition | |
