Refrigerator. Computer artwork showing how a refrigerator works. There are two sets of coiled pipes, one inside the refrigerator (at top) and one outside the refrigerator (at right). Inside the pipes is a refrigerant,a substance with a low boiling temperature. At bottom is a compressor (round). This compresses the refrigerant, which at this stage is a gas. This increase in pressure heats the refrigerant (red). As the refrigerant passes through the external pipes the heat dissipates and the gas condenses into a liquid. The liquid passes through an expansion valve (round, top) into the internal pipes, where it boils and vaporises back into a gas. This draws heat out of the refrigerator. The gas is sucked into the compressor and the cycle begins again | |
