Detail of the 14thtthh century mosaic set in the marble pavement of the Duomo of Siena. It shows the she-wolf suckling the twins Senio and Aschio, the sons of Remus (brother of Romulus) who, according to legend, were the founders of Rome. Legend has it that the origins of Siena were due to the twins,Senio (after who the city is named) and Aschio, fleeing from their uncle Romulus in Rome. The city's coat of arms symbolises the wolf and the twins. It was the Etruscans who established the town of Siena | |
